  • Gold Coast Motor Centre Responds to Claims that Australian Auto Industry is Coming to an End

(Transportation-News.com, October 19, 2012 ) Southport, QLD -- There are big signs of trouble for Australian car makers, as a new report from Ferrier Hodgson shows that locally-manufactured cars fell 16% during the month of August. The report shows that the Australian-manufactured Ford Falcon has fallen to a new 50 year low with its sales numbers.

Over the last four years, locally-made car sales have fallen 50%, as drivers are opting for cheaper import vehicles and more fuel-efficient small cars, instead of the larger SUVs that were popular in Australia for a number of years.

One of the major problems local car manufacturers are seeing is that locally made cars have lower resale values, and the owner of Gold Coast Motor Centre , both a retailer and buyer of Cars on the Gold Coast , says this is a big reason that many consumers are opting for imports.

“The Fords, Toyotas and Holdens that are manufactured here in Australia are taking a real beating, both in the new and used markets,” said the owner of Gold Coast. “The numbers are dismal, and even though the government continues to put money into the industry, the results aren’t there. Buyers have a lot of options when it comes to new vehicles, and they can get everything they want from the cheaper imports, and they know when it comes time to sell their car, they’re going to get better value from the resale of an import.”

While the owner of Gold Coast Motor Centre believes the Australian auto industry has a lot of work to do, he doesn’t think it’s a lost cause just yet.

“Australian auto manufacturers need to look at what customers really want,” said the dealership owner. “They’re getting what they want in an import, and that’s what our auto manufacturers need to realize to stay competitive. Buyers want moderately priced, reliable vehicles, with good options and good resale value. They’re also looking at smaller, more fuel efficient cars, particularly as Australia puts new emissions regulations on drivers, and so that’s a trend that needs to be looked at very closely by the industry.”

If something doesn’t happen to change the direction of the industry, it is reported that Ford, General Motors, Holden and Toyota could halt their local manufacturing, which would cost Australians 55,000 direct jobs and 250,000 indirect jobs.

“There is no doubt that we need an Australian automotive industry,” said the owner of Gold Coast. “I think it’s the job of the manufacturers that are local to take a long hard look at what they’re doing wrong and what foreign manufacturers are doing right, because we’ve seen cars are selling, it’s just not the Australian-made cars that are selling.”
