  • Automakers Look to Make the Windshield the Next Gadget reports Auto Glass Bargain

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 24, 2012 ) Houston, TX -- In the last decade automakers have essentially stuffed the vehicles they provide with more digital devices than one truly knows what to do with. From video screens, Bluetooth screens, as well as air bags and navigation gadgets, there are almost too many pieces of electronic equipment. However, there has been one large underutilized area by automobile companies: the windshield. And whether or not you like the idea, the lack of interaction with the glass surface is about to change.

Automakers are now looking to add a specially designed windshield that can share crucial information with drivers about their surroundings, and articles that will help improve safety while driving. Companies looking into the technology include General Motors Co., Daimler AG.

The use of the technology is known as 'augmented reality', wherein digital visuals are laid across real-world visuals. The windshields which are fitted with this technology will be capable of displaying driving directions, text messages, and even impending hazards. The hope is that by doing this without having to force the driver to take one's eyes off the road, driving can be made safer.

“Everyone’s working on this,” said Tom Seder, GM’s chief technologist for human machine interface. “The goal is to reduce head-down time and maybe make driving a more interactive experience.”

The augmented reality windshield has been in the works for some time, and has been a piece of safety equipment automakers have been working towards for some time. The windshields are not simply useful for messages or directions, but can also be utilized to enhance foggy or nighttime driving by outlining hard-to-see obstacles or possible impediments.

“It has to be done very judiciously, you don’t want to clutter the windshield with too much information and cause it to be a distraction,” said Mr. Seder. “At the root of this is the desire to make vehicles safer.”
