  • Facebook Gives Many Access to Learn English reports FBViro

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 29, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- A recent Facebook page that was aimed at English language learners in the Middle East, as well as North Africa, is attracting nearly 10,000 fans each and every week.

The Learn English MENA page, which is handled by the British Council, as “likes” exceeding 1 million. The page has seen a 200% increase in less than 18 months, according to the council.

The figures put Learn English MENA ahead of all other English language pages on the popular social media. The Learn Real English page, provides lessons based off organic conversations between native speakers. It has 300,000 likes, while voice of America Special English page attracts nearly 200,000 endorsers for its video-based learning content.

The Council has stated that the demand to learn English is growing at a high rate in the Middle East and North African regions. There are now more than 45 million monthly users for Facebook in the regions, and the success of this particular page can be chalked up to careful targeting by the makers.

The site is designed to help young people receive alerts on learning content from the British Council Learn English website network. There is advice from English Doctor Service as well. The sessions are both interactive and can be enjoyed three times per week. The sessions have a British Council teacher available to answer questions for those who are attempting to learn, as well.

According to Dalia Adel, MENA digital English project manager at the Council, Facebook provides valuable data on how learners are using the page. "We use surveys and analytics to ascertain what the fans want on the page, and then provide appropriate and engaging new content every day in order to help boost confidence and improve vocabulary, grammar, conversation skills, fluency and pronunciation," Adel said.

The overall success of the site can be attributed, at least partially, to the British Council working to target very specific groups of individuals. Caroline Moor, a former Council manager who set up the Learn English websites and is an education application publisher, stated that the use of the world's largest social network was something that can help build positive relationships between teachers and learners.

"This success hasn't just come out of the blue. Council staff have been building audiences through Facebook for some time now. Where ever they go they are using Facebook to keep in touch with the teachers and learners they meet," Moore said.
