  • Overweight Indonesian Officers Take on Mandatory Exercise Program reports Premium Green Beans

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 30, 2012 ) Salt Lake City, UT -- The overweight law enforcement officers in Indonesia's capital have been ordered to exercise, trading out their uniforms for gymwear and lining up twice a week for aerobic exercise.

Anyone who weighs in over 100 kg must follow a weight-lose program that is designed to combat the number of overweight officers. The move came after concern that overweight officers create a consideration that the officers cannot provide public protection, stated a Jakarta police spokesperson.

The spokesperson also stated that sedentary lifestyles and junk junk food have made the capital's officers put on the unwanted weight. Registration for the classes has already seen 300 officers enrolled. Anyone deemed to fat is required to exercise twice a week. He added that there are plans to expand the program to fit the need.

There is no plan in place to punish those who fail to lose weight while participating in the program. However, the exercising is mandatory. They can work at their own pace, the spokesperson stated, and are not required to follow any particular diet. The program is being considered for nationwide use.

There has been a similar program set in place by the Tangerang department, a city that lies just outside of Jakarta that holds 1,470 officers. The city hired trainers to help their 132 overweight employees get back into shape. The program involves medical teams to help monitor diets and other health issues.

"The fat and paunchy cops can't expect to catch fleeing criminals," said the Tangerang police chief, Colonel Wahyu Widada, while joining an afternoon's exercise session along with hundreds of other officers.

Certain officers have seen improvement, dropping 4.5 pounds after one month of working the program.

"I was embarrassed by my appearance. They keep motivating me Â… it's hard, but I have to try," said Sergeant Sugiar.

The police in Indonesia are often viewed negatively by the public in the country, where corruption is reportedly running rampant.
