  • British Tax Planned to Ease Passenger Total reports Chigwell Cars

(Transportation-News.com, January 16, 2013 ) Essex, U.K -- Those who are flying from the Heathrow and Gatwick airports are now going to be forced to pay a 'congestion charge' that will be double the amount of what is currently paid for in tax at the other British Airports.

The British air crisis is the probable cause of the fee hike, and the Government is looking into whether or not increasing the passenger toll will make congestion at the two busiest airports any less intensive. Both airports are on pace to be at full capacity in six years time.

A HM Revenue and Customs study has expressed that the number of passengers flying from Heathrow would fall nearly four million per year if a tax was levied on the already pricey fares.

Pending the passing of the plans, the tax on economy flight tickets to New York will rise to £32.50.

A similar outcome in the easing of passengers would be seen at the Gatwick airport in 2014, which would help persuade more passengers use the Luton, Birmingham, and Stansted airports.

Birmingham backs the ideal fully, while Heathrow has warned that the damage to Britain's trade will be negatively affected.

The Daily Telegraph was told by a BAA spokesperson that: “Long haul flights forced out of Heathrow by the higher taxes would not go to other UK airports - they would go to our European competitors in Paris, Frankfurt or Amsterdam.” The spokesperson continued, stating, “The economic growth and trade deals that come with these flights would then benefit Europe, not the UK.”

A separate spokesperson, representing the DBI, who lobbies for air travel companies, stated that the answer to the problem was in increase in capacity, rather than deter the natural progression of business.

'We're already losing business to other European destinations so we can't kick this into the long grass,” the source stated to the paper.

“We need new connections with fast-growing markets like India, China and South America - with space for airlines to put on new flights”
