  • SoCal Airport Control Towers Likely To be Closed In April reports Lotus Transportation

(Transportation-News.com, April 01, 2013 ) Irvine, CA -- Experts have stated that the closures of 14 Southern air traffic control towers could increase the risks of collisions in both the air and on the ground. Facilities that include those in Palmdale, Oxnard, and Lancaster could be shut starting on April 7, according to sources.

On most days, nearly two dozen student pilots circle over downtown Riverside, taking their cues on takeoffs, landings and on the position of other planes from the air traffic controllers at the city airport.

“They're an extra set of eyes on the runway," flight instructor Jose Gonzalez said. "When you're new, that's pretty important."

However, guiding voices from the airport tower could be going silent within weeks, and the Federal Aviation Administration is expected to decide Friday whether or not to shut down over 200 air traffic control towers all across the United States, including 23 within California. The move would be part of a plan to cut $600 million in spending from the federal government's forced spending cuts, known as sequestration. The towers could be closed on April 7.

Southern California could be losing 14 towers and airports in various areas which handle civil, commercial, and military flights. On the list is the Santa Monica Airport, which will be considered for a later round of cuts under the same money-saving plan.

Hundreds of airports all across the nation have been operating without control towers, depending upon communication between pilots over their short-wave radios. However, losing a main-station of control for airspace such as Southern California, which has tens of millions of individuals flying per year, increases the risk of collision in the air and on the various runways, according to experts.

"The work of air traffic controllers is a very necessary layer of safety." said Bob Spencer, a spokesman for the L.A. County Department of Public Works, which operates six of the region's airports. "This is a densely populated area with heavily trafficked skies."
