  • Hidden Rental Car Fees Catch Consumers When they are Most Vulnerable

(Transportation-News.com, July 31, 2013 ) England, UK -- Frank Keel was on his way to visit family in Utah last year and rented a car at Salt Lake City International Airport, but when he went to pick up the car, the online quote the company had given him was way off from what the company charged him at the desk.

Keel said he was charged fees for wheels on his car, among other things, and when he asked about it, the company said they couldn’t do anything about it.

According to Deseret News, car rental companies rake in $23.63 billion a year in the United States with over 1.8 million cars in service last year. Those numbers are $7.2 billion higher than 10 years ago, and as renting cars becomes more accessible and more expensive, it’s becoming even more important to know how to save money and avoid fees and getting stuck with unexpected charges.

Hertz is an example of a growing industry with growing fees. The rental car giant has been expanding its locations where it competes with car sharing and hourly rental places like Zipcar and Enterprise, that have a greater local presence.

According to Neil Abrams, founder of Abrams Consulting, a car rental consulting and travel market research organization, 20 years ago, car rental companies just bundled all the fees together and charged consumers one price. However, people started complaining and wanted to know what the details of the costs were, which led to the unbundling and the explanation of the fees.

Now, companies list the fees and taxes, including special taxes, and in Keel’s case, tire disposal fees. Abram says these fees could cost as much as 40 to 50 percent of the final cost to rent the car.
