(Transportation-News.com, October 09, 2013 ) Kent, UK -- UK motorists are reportedly 50% more likely to have a road traffic accident on summer or 'all-round' tyres than on winter wheels and tyres. The report, conducted by Road Safe, has found that modern cars are geared towards having lower tread that works better on dry roads than wet, or ice and snow covered roads; despite the fact that the UK has one of the wettest climates in Europe.
"Having a set of winter wheels and tyres is one way of keeping safe and keeping your shiny alloy wheels looking smart for when the warmer weather comes back around", says Kevin Greer, Managing Director of WheelWright Ltd. He goes on to state, "Drivers don't realise just how effective winter tyres can be. They dig into ice and snow, they disperse water more effectively and they are designed to work better in low temperature conditions. Tyre pressures make such a difference, too, but many drivers aren't aware what pressure or type of tyre they should have on their car as autumn and winter come around."
The report found that 82% of drivers could not confirm what tyre pressures their specific car should be run at, when fully loaded with passengers and baggage, or when just one person is in the car. There were 14% that owned winter tyres, and consequently, they were the ones that knew what tyre pressures were important, and 4% did not have space for a spare set of wheels and tyres. Some tyre fitting garages, however, will store winter tyres and wheels over the warmer months for you, for a nominal charge.
