  • Algeria Plane Crash Kills More Than 100 Amid Stormy Weather

    (Transportation-News.com, February 11, 2014 ) -- Press Release Distribution Services --

AccuWeather Global Weather Center -- 11 February 2014 -- AccuWeather.com report a military plane crashed in eastern Algeria Tuesday afternoon local time, Feb. 11, 2014, killing more than 100.

Traveling from Ouargla to Constantine, the plane crashed in the mountains of the Oum al-Bouaghi province, a few hundred miles from the capital of the country, according to Reuters.

At the time of the crash, an area of low pressure moving through the region was producing widespread showers mixed with snow in the higher terrain of the area.

"Along with the rain and snow, wind gusts more than 30 mph were reported in several locations in the region," AccuWeather Meteorologist Eric Leister said.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

According to Reuters, the plane was transporting family members of the armed forces. With the death toll mounting, this could be the worst crash in Algeria since 2003, Reuters reports.

Cleanup from the crash may prove to be difficult, as weather conditions for the region will remain stormy until late Tuesday night.

"Winds will remain gusty with a few showers into Tuesday evening local time," Leister said. "Dry weather is expected Tuesday night, but then more showers will return on Wednesday."
