(Transportation-News.com, August 18, 2014 ) Sarasota, FL -- The Safety of Hands Free Phone Usage While Driving
The National Safety Council (NSC) reports that 1.6 million car accidents in the States are caused by hand held cell phones. They go on to report that there is an accident every 24 seconds where someone is manually using their phone for making or receiving calls, reading or sending emails or texting. It is interesting to note that the majority of these accidents are caused by young people. Therefore there are young drivers who are not only inexperienced behind the wheel, but they are also distracted by their hand held phones.
It is estimated that 660,000 drivers are using their cell phone at the same time during daylight hours in the States. Safer driving conditions would be experienced, if all these drivers received and made hands free cell phone calls. The Institute for Highway Safety has horrifying statistics, such as 11 teenagers die on the roads every day due to texting while driving. Texting means that is not possible to have both hands on the steering wheel. It also distracts the driver from concentrating on the road and its surroundings.
The NSC also states that 26% of road accidents in 2013 were caused by people using hand held cell phones. It has been suggested by watchdog groups that the fines for cell phone usage while driving are far too low. In most States they start at $50 for the first offense and increase with each subsequent offense. However, the maximum penalty is $350 and it is obviously not a high enough deterrent, as drivers continue to use hand held cell phones.
Fatalities caused by drivers using hand held phones have just overtaken deaths caused by not wearing a seat belt. The powers that be have introduced a campaign, which they call "Get your hands off it", to try and educate people on the dangers of driving while using a hand held phone. The safety of hands free is obvious: it means that both hands are on the wheel and the driver is concentrating on other road users.
