(Transportation-News.com, November 05, 2014 ) Charleston, NC -- Drivers should be especially wary of animals on the road during the autumn and winter season, particularly deer, due to their migration and mating seasons occurring during this time of year.
Recently, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute released a report that stated 175 people were killed on U.S. roads in collisions with animals, mostly deer.
In fact, the risk of colliding with a deer continues to increase every year. An annual analysis by State Farm estimated that about 1 out of every 169 drivers will hit a deer within the next year. The auto insurance giant also says that those odds are up nearly 3 percent from a year ago. Crashes involving deer are also becoming increasingly expensive, averaging nearly $3,900 per claim. These accidents are covered under comprehensive polities but not under liability only insurance policies.
The South Carolina Insurance News Service, a nonprofit organization funded by insurance companies that do business within the state, say that there will be a drastic rise in deer-vehicle collisions. The most likely times for these wrecks are early at dawn and in the early evening around dusk. Some tips provided by the nonprofit suggest that drivers utilize their high beams to reflect the eyes of deer and sound their horns to frighten the deer’s off the road.
Crashing into an animal running across the road into the headlights of an oncoming car can be a very scary thought for a driver. In some cases, injured drivers may be able to pursue compensation if certain conditions apply. An example would be if the animal is owned by a person and was let out loose.
