  • Peruvian Shamanism Remains in the Controversial Spotlight of Tourism

(Transportation-News.com, November 24, 2014 ) San Francisco, CA -- With the tourism industry being rocked by an influx of Westerners seeking "alternative" cures and perspectives on self-healing, traditional Peruvian Shaminism has taken a backseat to the sensational headlines of Ayahuasca and "miracle medicine" flooding newspapers across the western world. The unfortunate reality is that many opportunistic "medicine men" have capitalized on these events and the results for the real practitioners of these ancient arts has been catastrophic.

Maestro Aleister, Who is known for 'El Amarre De Amor Mas Poderoso" is one such shaman. Aleister is a 4th generation shaman whose family hails from the far north of the Peruvian Amazon. In a recent interview he expressed disgust over the direction that this type of sensationalism has caused to the westerners who seek out these cures, as well as the traditional medicine men who have selflessly served their communities for generations.

'For generations we have healed our sick and nurtured our land, we were ignored, now, they have seen the value we offer and created a commodity. Shamanism is no different from any profession, some people do this, and some do that. The vidente's that are offering these services are not real practitioners of shamanism, they are opportunists who are taking advantage of foreigners by selling whatever they can. From the time I was a child, amarres is where I excelled, I healed relationships and mended hearts, that is all I do - amarres poderosos' says Maestro Aleister.

With no verifiable statistics regarding shamanistic tourism, it is hard to say just how many tourists are travelling to the Amazon for these shamanic rituals, but everyday up to a hundred tourists can be found flying into the Iquitos airport, and there is no shortage of "shamans" willing to serve their needs.

'If you find a shaman at the airport who is offering to sell you an Ayahuasca ritual, then this is no shaman, it is a bartender. The problem must come before the ritual; there are many rituals that the person seeking healing has never heard of. A real shaman will not offer a solution without knowing the problem' - Maestro Aleister.
