(Transportation-News.com, December 07, 2014 ) Las Vegas, NV -- Jennifer Zamora-Jamison lost her husband seven years ago, following a distracted-driving crash, but more recently lost a daughter too. Now, she's just plain angry, saying... "I'm actually more angry this time than seven years ago, mainly because of the lack of concern about highway safety. I've just lost too many people in my family through distracted-driving." The Texan resident now plans to tell her story to Texas lawmakers when new legislation begins in early 2014.
According to Jennifer Smith, executive director of SD (Stop Distractions,) Texas is just one of six US states that doesn't have a ban on text messaging behind the wheel, with the remainder states being Arizona, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana and Oklahoma. SD are also pushing for tougher laws in Texas, where 1 out of 5 crashes is the result of distracted-driving.
Politicians and lawmakers are currently debating over whether they should ban the use of mobile devices while driving. Despite the political debate, few would disagree that using a mobile device was a form of distracted-driving, as well as being very dangerous, especially with nearly 1 out of 5 crashes involving a distracted driver. Research from the Texas Department of Transportation reveals that out of the 3,377 Texas traffic related deaths in 2013, 460, an overall 14 percent had involved a distracted driver, whereas 32 percent of accidents involved a drunken driver.
Polls would suggest that people do agree that using a smartphone does distract motorists while driving. Whether it should be a punishable offense or not, polls suggest it should, with one pollster suggesting that there is probably a need for an app that would prevent drivers from engaging in such behavior. Statistics though do suggest that motorists using a smartphone while driving is on the increase.
According to Neil Speight, co-director of Freddie and Sebbie, if no measures are put in place to counteract the rising use of smartphones by motorists, there would be no way to stop it, and said..."With the increasing amount of things that can always be done with electronic devices, I can see distracted driving becoming a lot more commonplace." He added... "I often come across parents saying how uncomfortable they felt about becoming distracted while driving, saying that the testing time always came when they had to reach for something in the rear-seat car organizer. Our company has actually responded to their concerns, having just released the front seat car organizer on Amazon, which we hope to be a contributory factor towards helping to reduce the rate of distracted-driving by motorists with kids in the back of the car."
