(Transportation-News.com, March 04, 2015 ) Waterford, MI – Many people who have good mechanical skills wonder whether they can make more money by opening up their own repair shop. There are lots of places to get business advice, and many of them are good, but there are plenty of people giving advice without ever having experienced success. To help provide help from someone who is currently experiencing success in business, marketing director of The Ultimate Analyst Chris Wechner interviewed Sam Hanna of Sam’s Automotive in Waterford.
Many businesses fail sometime within the first two (2) years of being in business, but Sam’s Automotive will be celebrating its sixth (6th) anniversary in 2015. Despite the fact the car repair shop is on Dixie Highway in Waterford, where there are no fewer than ten (10) other auto repair shops, Sam’s Auto is always busy. It appears that he is doing something right.
Within the interview, Hanna mentioned that, in the beginning, he worked on cars as a professional for ten (10) years before opening up his business in 2009.
Besides his experience with cars, he explained what he did to build up his clientele base. At first, he used ValPak, a direct mailer of local coupons, because he read a statistic stating that over 50% of people receiving these coupons through their mail actually open and look through them. Sam said that he would get a few customers each month from that. He also started working on people’s cars from the other places within his strip mall, like AutoZone and Al’s Quick Lube.
“(The customers) see my service, and they started recommending me to people,” he said.
Hanna said that in addition to those things, however, he said he really started building his business by giving service that earned enthusiastic referrals. He emphasized the need for a business to treat customers right. He said, “When you treat people right, what goes around comes around.”
He added, “Don’t take advantage of the customers, and do a good job when you work on their cars…Trust is the big thing. People won’t trust you if you don’t treat them well… Treat the customer right, because when you treat somebody right, he will tell (people), no matter what…Do a good job with reasonable prices.”
