It forms the most integral part of the electric traction system and helps in the smooth movement of motors such as locomotives, high-speed trains, and trams.
Traction transformer is used to bring down the voltage from the overhead electric line, i.e., 15/25 kV to the desired voltage level, i.e., 0.7/1.5 kV for the traction converters in electric trains. For over a century now, these transformers have been used in railway traction. It is considered to be the best alternative to the conventional fossil-fuel*based traction systems.
