  • Electric and Autonomous Vehicles and Sustainable Components Remain Ford's Focus

(Transportation-News.com, June 28, 2017 ) Ford Motor Company “put the world on wheels,” and the company will continue to grease those wheels with “industry firsts” such as electrified and autonomous vehicles built with sustainable products, a company vice president has announced.

Vehicles powered by electricity are just as revolutionary today as the gas-fired Model T was when it rolled off assembly lines in 1908, said Ken Washington, Ford's vice president of research and advanced engineering, during a keynote address at the Manufacturing & Technology Expo in Cleveland. Known as “Tin Lizzie,” the affordable Model T transformed the way Americans live, work and travel – and Ford will burnish that legacy in the pivotal years to come, Washington said.

Ford ambassadors like Brad Cambridge, General Manager of Ford Country, are excited for the innovations that continue to improve the lives of loyal Ford customers.

“The Model T made car ownership a reality for average Americans, not just the well-to-do,” Cambridge said. “Fords don't cost $300 anymore, but the spirit of the company remains the same.”

    Electric vehicles should spark sales

That spirit will manifest itself in Ford's plans to release 13 electrified vehicles in the next five years, including hybrid versions of the iconic Ford F-150 and Mustang and a fully electric, small SUV with an estimated range of at least 300 miles.

Mindful that more drivers might shift to hybrid and electric vehicles when recharging becomes as simple as filling a tank with gas, Washington said the best minds at Ford are working with those at BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen to pack 350 kilowatts of power into one charge.

    Ford favors service-based autonomy

Vehicle autonomy represents a change akin to Henry Ford's introduction of the vehicle assembly line, Washington said. He sees the greatest application of this technology in the service sector, especially among transportation and delivery companies in congested urban markets.

With Ford's acquisition of Chariot, a “smart van” company, Ford is developing ride-sharing services in San Francisco and Austin. The company will roll out services in eight more cities this year, Washington said.

Ford innovations turn competitors green with envy

Ford is determined to remain at the forefront of integrating sustainable materials in its vehicles to reduce their weight and energy consumption, Washington said.

Already, Ford has integrated castor oil, cellulose, coconut fiber, nectar and soybeans into its vehicles. It recent forged a partnership with tequila maker Jose Cuervo to study the application of remnant fibers from the agave plant, which is used to produce the beverage. Such partnerships demonstrate Ford's commitment to being environmentally responsible while reducing operating costs for consumers, Washington said.

What would Henry Ford say about such innovations? Cambridge thinks he knows.

“I think some of these ideas would take his breath away,” he said. “But then, the man who put the world on wheels did the same thing.”
