  • CDC Announces Auto Accidents as One of the Winnable Battles

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 19, 2011 ) ATLANTA, GA- Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced that motor vehicle accidents are considered “winnable battles” for the CDC. Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC, has chosen these six winnable battles as priorities that he sees the CDC can combat.

These winnable battles include: AIDS, obesity/nutrition, teen pregnancy, auto accidents, and health care infection. Frieden calls these health problems winnable battles because, he says, proven programs can save lives and reduce harm from each of these health problems. He He believes government can make drastic improvements if available money and manpower were made accessible to the CDC.

According to the CDC, car accidents are the leading cause of death among those under the age of thirty-four. In 2009, nearly two million people required an emergency department visit after a car accident. The economic impact of automobile accidents is also notable. In 2005, the lifetime costs of crash-related deaths and injuries among drivers and passengers were totaled at $70 billion.

The CDCÂ’s research and prevention include: improving car and booster seats for children, seat belt use, and reducing impaired driving. The organization also works to prevent pedestrian and bicycle injuries and deaths. The CDC also provides information for specific high-risk groups such as older adults or teenaged drivers.

For example, research at the University of Iowa that has been funded by the CDC is studying an educational intervention program for parents of newly licensed teen drivers that increase parentsÂ’ involvement in teaching driving skills and safe driving behavior. Also, graduated drivers license programs have been implemented in almost every U.S. state which the CDC helped to employ. Additionally, a team of experts led by the CDC has studied the effectiveness of designated drivers.

Financial liability is usually the responsibility of the insurance company of the driver who is at fault. However, litigation could involve liquor liability related to someone serving alcohol to an intoxicated individual and not taking the appropriate action to prevent them from driving. For this reason (and many others), auto accident victims seek legal counsel.
