  • Report: Millions Purchased Auto Insurance Policies Online in 2010

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 26, 2011 ) Los Angeles, CA -- Insurance websites got some good news last week when marketing-research company comScore reported that the annual number of American consumers who shop for and buy car insurance online remained relatively steady between 2009 and 2010.

The report showed that American consumers submitted about 35 percent more quotes over the Web in 2010 when compared with 2006, although the year-to-year volume was down slightly. According to comScore, about 37 million quotes were generated online last year, compared with about 27.5 million in 2006.

As for sales, an approximate 2.9 million policies were sold online last year, according to the report.

A growing demographic documented in the report was those who feel comfortable with and do purchase policies over the Web. Of the respondents to a comScore survey, about 1 in 7 said in 2009 that they bought coverage online. In the 2011 survey, about 1 in 5 respondents said they had done so.

A separate comScore report released earlier this year indicated that a number of sites providing comparison sample rates for a range of insurers are seeing increased traffic. These sites generate approximate rates for multiple companies based on their rating structures and usersÂ’ basic driver and coverage profiles.

In its pamphlet for prospective policyholders, the Missouri Department of Insurance touted this form of shopping as being much more efficient than conducting manual comparisons by going from agent to agent.

“The Department recommends that you get three quotes when shopping,” Missouri insurance regulators write in the pamphlet. “But with Internet shopping, three quotes take no time at all. You could probably get 20 quotes in the same amount of time it takes to drive to or call three agents.”
