(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 17, 2011 ) San Francisco, CA -- Between 1927 and 1957 the Mille Miglia was the preeminent race in Europe. The one thousand miles around Italy was known to separate many drivers from their reputations and turn an tinkerer into an automaker. The race is a shadow of its former self today and is run as a purely historic event. Despite that change, the race is still popular and is making its North American debut in California.
The Mille Miglia attracts some 350 entrants annually, all driving cars made during the racing years of 1927-1957. During the last week of October, 2011 the Mille Miglia North American Tribute race saw 50 vintage cars roar from Santa Barbara to San Francisco and back, over a three day period.
Running the cars is only part of the attraction. In Italy, the drivers are treated like visiting dignitaries. Five star accommodations and fine dining are a prerequisite. The same held true for the North American debut. Most people would expect a great deal for the base fee of $5,750 or the VIP package at 8G's.
There are Mille Miglia in several countries with plans to expand into the United Arab Emirates soon. The prestige of simply running this race is enough to attract a voracious following in other race countries. Hopefully, the same will become true here.
