  • CLWNC: US Traffic Fatalities Hit 60 Year Low

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 17, 2011 ) Wilmington, NC -- On December 12, 2011, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced finalized traffic fatality and injury data for 2010. The numbers showed that highway deaths fell to 32,885, the lowest mark since 1949. The record decline came in spite of Americans driving nearly 46 billion more miles than ever before.

Secretary LaHood said,''While we have more work to do to continue to protect American motorists, these numbers show weÂ’re making historic progress when it comes to improving safety on our nationÂ’s roadways. Thanks to the tireless work of our of our safety agencies and partner organizations over the past few decades, to save lives and reduce injuries, weÂ’re saving lives, reducing injuries, and building the foundation for what we hope will be even greater success in the future.''

The updated numbers for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show the following results:

    1. The lowest proportion of fatalities ever recorded: 1.10 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, down from 1.15 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2009.
    2. Fatalities declined for passenger cars, light trucks, SUVs, and minivans.
    3. Drunk driving related fatalities dropped 4.9%.
    4. Fatalities rose when pedestrians, motorcycle, and large truck occupants were involved.

This is great news as safety regulations continue to improve. America is currently in an age of the safest cars ever produced even as people drive more miles per day than some drove in a year in the past.
