  • NorthCarolinaAutoLoan.com Reports That US Government Wants to Ban In-Vehicle Twitter and Facebook

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 24, 2012 ) Wilmington, NC -- The U.S. Transportation Department is calling on automakers to come up with new devices that prevent drivers from accessing Twitter, Facebook and other social media networks while their vehicles are in motion.

The departmentÂ’s secretary Ray LaHood released a set of non-binding guidelines on February 16 calling for a disabling of social media accounts, Internet browsing, manual texting, the ability to manually enter addresses into navigation systems and the dial 10-digit phone numbers unless the vehicle has been placed in park.

These guidelines only refer to built-in systems. The DOT says it may release guidelines on handheld devices and driving at a later date. Pleased about the non-binding collection of words, Barbara Harsha, executive director of the Governors Highway Safety Association, said in an e-mail, “DOT is on the right path. We particularly like the guideline for disabling devices that text and surf the Internet, etc.”

Expressing similar thoughts, LaHood said at the release of the guidelines, “Distracted driving is unsafe, irresponsible and can have devastating consequences. Every single time a driver takes his or her focus off the road, the driver puts his or her life and the lives of others at risk.”
