  • Smart PhonesÂ… Distracted Drivers: 'California faces up to deadly epidemic' says Silicon State Legal Network.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 20, 2012 ) Los Angeles, CA -- It’s the award that nobody wants, yet California reluctantly holds. Being the road accident capital of the USA is nothing to be proud of, especially when the cause of up to 80% of the State’s incidents can literally be held in the palm of your hand.

Recent survey results from HealthDay show that over a third of drivers admit to texting while driving – with 13% also saying that they regularly surf the internet while at the wheel.

In the United States alone there are over one million injuries and six thousands deaths each year due to distracted drivers. With California claiming a larger chunk of this statistic than anyone else, is there anything that can be done to combat this deadly epidemic?

“Drivers really need to smarten up and keep their eyes on the road,” says Jason Wilson, Founder of Silicon State Legal Network – an Attorney Network helping victims of car accidents in the state.

He continues: “We see a lot of people come through our doors that are looking for the right Attorney, and sadly a lot of these were not in the vehicle driven by a distracted driver. Those behind the wheel must remember that their actions can cost the limbs, lives and wellbeing of those who are totally innocent.”

The statistics show that younger drivers aged 16-24 are more likely to use a smart phone while driving. Many find this number surprising, especially when taking into account that using a cellphone while driving has been illegal in California since the 1st January 2009.

In fact, for those under 18, using a hands-free talking device is also against the law, with a first infraction costing up to $50 if caught by law enforcement officers.

“The authorities are constantly putting measures in place to make driving in California much safer. However, if these rules and regulations are not followed we cannot expect the distracted driving, as well as the overall accidents statistics to get any lower,” adds Wilson.

While sympathy for the guilty may be limited among many, bystanders, passengers and pedestrians remain at huge risk from drivers lacking full concentration. As Wilson attests, this can result in a long and complicated legal battle:

“Many of those injured by distracted drivers need to turn to the courts for justice and financial assistance, especially if their injuries are life changing. They come to firms like ours to be referred to the most suitable type of attorney for their particular circumstances,” he says.

In fact, the team at California Accident Lawyer are soon going to be adding free-to-access accident reports, Q&As and other useful resources for those looking for help.

“It’s all in an effort to assist those who need our expertise. We also hope that the legal system in California will make examples out of those who continue to keep our accidents statistics as high as they are,” concludes Wilson.
