(Transportation-News.com, October 06, 2018 ) GlobalData’s Construction Intelligence Center (CIC) is currently tracking airport construction projects in the Middle East and Africa with a total value of US$196.4 billion. Of this, US$42.1 billion is in the planning stage.
The UAE accounts for the highest value with US$53.9 billion, followed by Qatar with projects valuing US$26.0 billion. Saudi Arabia and Kuwait follow with airport construction projects with a value of US$20.3 billion and US$18.8 billion respectively. The largest projects currently in the pipeline are the US$37.1 billion Al Maktoum International Airport in The UAE and the US$26.0 billion Hamad International Airport in Qatar.
The largest and busiest airport in the Middle East is in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with total passenger traffic reaching 88.2 million in 2017 edging closer to the world number one airport Atlanta, Georgia with 103.9 million. Airport Council International (ACI) forecasts that the Middle East’s air passenger traffic will grow by 17.9% in the period 2016 - 2040. The Middle East acts as an ‘aviation bridge’ for long haul flights north to south and east to west so will increase investment to develop this role.
