  • Canadian Tourist and Friend Believed to Have Been Killed By Bed Bug Poison reports ShopBedding.com

(Transportation-News.com, September 29, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Canadian tourist Cathy Huynh and friend Karo Bowerman were rushed to the hospital shortly after their arrival in the Vietnamese city of Nha Trang due to difficulty breathing. Bowerman was dead within three hours, while Huynh lingered for three days before surcummbing to her ailment.

The Vietnamese authorities claim not to know what killed the girls. Each showed signs of having been poisoned by chlorpyrifos, which is a potent pest control for bed bugs.

The poison has been linked to several deaths across Southeast Asia. Dr John Ross, who is an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School stated, “The profuse vomiting and profound respiratory/circulatory collapse are very suggestive.” Dr Ross went on to say that the Vietnamese results do not rule out poisoning, and stated, “It also depends on the sophistication of the analysis.… I doubt that they would have the same resources that you would find in a Western toxicology lab.”

A senior police official shared with the Tuoi Tre News the results of Bowerman’s autopsy did not show any evidence she had been poisoned. “She died from breathing failures, circulatory collapse due to brain edema [brain swelling].… No toxic traces have been found in her blood and gastric fluids,” he said, adding that the police do not plan to pursue any criminal charges.

The inconsistencies of the two stories are easily explained when one understands how chlorpyrifos is processed in the body. It is hard to detect because it has a short half life. After 24 hours, the chemical is completely eliminated from the body.

“Perhaps Cathy Huynh would have lived if she had gone to another hotel,” Dr. Ross stated. ““It was probably used to kill bedbugs in the rooms that the tourists slept in, and the rooms were probably not well-ventilated and/or the windows were closed during the night,” he added. Chlorpyrifos is banned in the United States and Canada for household use, but is still used in parts of Asia.
