(Transportation-News.com, October 17, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- With luck on her side, at a prize drawing at Notre Dame, Kathy Orth brought home a whopping $100,000. She felt as if this were a dream. Over the past eight years, the Notre Dame School in Burlington has been hosting a sweepstakes called Pot O’ Blue and Gold, where up to 60 prizes are awarded totaling a sum of $150,000. Father Marty Goetz chanted,”We’re the best school in the diocese,” as he started to fire up a crowd of over 1,000 people at the drawing.
The school was aiming at a goal of 3,000 tickets, costing $100 a ticket. After all the prizes and expenses, around $100,000 will go towards the school. Without this fundraiser, tuition and costs for students would be quite a bit higher, which is why it is so important to get people involved.
Some of the money that is raised from the event goes to teacher salaries and helps bulk up the general fund for projects, such as playground equipment for the kids. Also, with the buildings being more than 50 years old, constant upkeep is needed which also ends up costing quite a bit.
The school is said to be a good alternative choice for students who are interested in a Catholic education. With the bad economy and people keeping track of every penny, this fundraiser is more important than ever. As the final drawing neared, the crowd became overwhelmed and talked about what they would do with the money if they won. Talk of paying off debts and trips to exotic places filled the air. But after Orth heard her name drawn, a quick, flustered call was made to her mom.
Kathy Orth and her mother Helen Moeller, who lives in West Point, purchased a ticket to the raffle together every year. After their exchange in excitement, Orth decided on using the money to help with her son’s upcoming heart surgery, and a new truck for her and her husband. Moeller mentioned that extra money was always good to have, especially with grandchildren. It’s still hard for them to believe that they were the final draw for the grand prize.
