  • Microsoft to Overhaul MSN website with New Design reports WPMDigital.com.au

(Transportation-News.com, October 14, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- A new news operation by Microsoft has the company creating a new MSN website for the November release of Windows 8.

The company is making a “big, multi-million dollar investment” in order to create what is described as a “decent-sized media operation,” according to MSN Product Management Group Vice President, Bob Visse.

Recently, Microsoft sold the 50% stake in MSNBC.com to partner NBCUniversal, which is now owned by Comcast. MSN is building a new news team at its Bellevue offices while the MSNBC and Microsoft offices are being downsized.

Reuters, the Associated Press, and NBC will be one of the chief sources of the MSN aggregate. According to Visse, it will also supply some of its own content. The vice president did not state how many individuals would be employed at the new offices.

The website was Microsoft’s flagship site, and garnered around 480 million visitors per month. The site was considered one of the largest portals on the internet along with rivals Yahoo and AOL. The site also serves as a the gateway to all Microsoft online services like Skype’s online calling software, and Outlook mail.

Windows 8 touch-optimized system and the new Internet Explorer 10 require the site to have a radical overhaul. The new look must be designed with a touch screen and tablet users in mind along with the standard PC user. The site will also now support a uniform look across each of its sections.

Microsoft clearly has a growing interest in creating its own content, as opposed to simply displaying other countries contents. It hired a former CBS executive to run the new studio in charge of original entertainment for Xbox gaming consoles.
