  • Reddit and 4Chan 'Trolling' Stops Taylor Swift Performance in Boston reports TCSAssociates.com

(Transportation-News.com, October 16, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- Earlier this year, online trolls instigated by a local journalist, successfully sent the rapper Pitbull to the most remote Walmart in the United States. He was set to perform at the chapter store that received the most Facebook likes and ended up in the small town of Kodiak, in Alaska.

4Chan and Reddit ran a similar online trolling campaign to get the country and pop singer, Taylor Swift, to perform at the Horace Mann School for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing in Boston. However, Taylor Swift’s managers and the four contest sponsors disagreed with the way the “fair” campaign was rigged. Swift decided not to perform at the Horace Mann School and instead she, along with event sponsors Chegg, Papa John's pizza, CoverGirl and American Greetings, pledged $10,000 each to the school. VH1's Save the Music program also donated $10,000 worth of instruments to the school, which has discussed reviving its music education program. Horace Mann students will also receive tickets to Swift's next local performance.

Jeremiah Ford, Horace Mann School’s principal told the Boston Globe that the school, controversies aside, was happy with the outcome. "Are we the winner? Absolutely," he stated. Ford had appropriated the trolling campaign and publicly welcomed the opportunity to have Swift perform at the school.

The competition attracted nationwide attention in August when Reddit and 4Chan decided to take over the contest. Soon after, some critics accused the websites for being insensitive towards the hearing-impaired community. However, there were supporters who voted “fairly” for Horace Mann in an effort to bring awareness to the hearing impaired community's ability to appreciate music.
