(Transportation-News.com, October 16, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- The wallet started its existence as a practical tool in which currency could be carried, as well as a status symbol implying that you actually had money to carry.
Then came the plastic credit card, which was designed to fit inside a wallet’s inner pockets.
Much like the wallet, the credit card has remained the same universal size for all these decades.
Similarly, checks are near the same size as paper currency.
On the other hand, paper bills issued by companies seeking payment vary in size across the board.
Sure, you can always pay your bills online, but one often prefers the predictability of the post office, which tends not to fail.
The internet, conversely, is riddled with potential security breaches, which makes one hesitate to share one’s social security number, mother’s maiden name or bank account number online.
Companies that urge us to pay our bills online are less interested in saving trees than in saving themselves the time and trouble of opening envelopes and posting payments.
The point? No two envelopes are alike. Each must be closely examined to see where the mail-back section of the bill should go so that the address shows up correctly in the window. One’s cellphone company has dispensed with envelopes completely, urging its customers to make their own envelopes.
Why is it so difficult to standardize envelopes? Why can’t we return to using the standard 4 1/4-by-9 1/2 size developed decades ago?
If they were to process a universally sized envelope might even help the post office, which has experienced many financial losses in recent years.
Perhaps it is time to form a privatized board of standards to create a standardized statement.
