  • New Airport Proposed for Melbourne as Population Rises reports VHA

(Transportation-News.com, November 09, 2012 ) Melbourne, Australia- It appears that Melbourne could be seeing a new major commercial passenger airport in its southeast section. The reason cited for the building is based upon the city’s overall development over the next couple of decades.

The new airports could be the hub of national domestic flights. It would host 300-seater passenger planes, with potential for expansion into international flight as a second stage of development.

It would be the third major airport in the area, alongside Tullamarine and Avalon, for Victoria.

There is a discussion paper to be released Monday that states the road congestion is hampering access to Tullamarine, and that the general population size of Adelaide and the rest of the city’s east and southeast are simply problematic.

A domestic airport in the Tooradine area is an option. Business groups named Tyabb and South Gippsland as other possible sites for the new construction.

Mathew Guy, planning minister, stated that an airport in Western Port would make the most sense. He cited cross-town traffic as the main reason for a such a move.

"It would suit people who might be travelling on business to other parts of the east coast of Australia who would have the option to do a reverse commute rather than running the gauntlet of Bell St or CityLink or the Monash in peak hour," he said.

"We should have the debate or the discussion, at least, around the idea. It's a facility you would put out as an expression-of-interest to the private sector."

Business owners are excited about the proposition of an airport in the area. Nola Delorenzo, owner of Fins Seafood in Tooradin, state he shared in that notion.

"We have to travel a good hour's drive to get to Tullamarine and we always have to leave early to account for traffic," she said. "It would be absolutely fantastic for local tourism, it's needed out this side of town."

The new planning will replace Labor’s controversial Melbourne 2030 plan, as it failed to meet housing targets for the growing population. The population within Melbourne is expected to reach 6.4 million by 2050, according to experts.
