  • Secondary Route Travel on the Rise in Australia reports Discount Airport Parking Melbourne

(Transportation-News.com, November 11, 2012 ) Melbourne, Australia- Australia has begun to follow in Europe's footsteps when it comes to secondary airports, despite having a relatively small population in comparison.

The airports that are further from city centers serve as airlines that have lower charges for passengers and lower runway usage. This enables ticket prices to be lower for the consumer, but can also mean lower retail prices for things such as car parking.

International airline flights at Gold Coast have boomed in Queensland. This, despite Brisbane airport being a mere 35 miles away. There are three daily services to Auckland New Zealand, as well as international flights to Tokyo and Osaka, Japan; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Singapore and Christchurch. The airport was considered a small domestic airport a decade ago, but now is thriving.

The growth of Victoria’s Avalon airport is not as hyped as the Gold Coast, and it has lowered airfare and received federal government approval for an international terminal to boost interest in its use.

Tiger Airways suffered a false start at Avalon up until recent years after receiving major safety violations. Tiger finally has its operating license renewed by Civil Aviation Safety Authority, and the airline is asking customers to provide destination they would most like to see the airline return to. Avalon came up fourth on the list, suggesting that it may find a niche in domestic flights such as Perth, Adelaide, Sydney, and Gold Coast.

Jetstar has kept a regimen of four flights per day from Avalon to Sydney, and also has a daily to Brisbane. International freight operations may be in the near future for the airline. The Victorian government committed to building a rail connection of the Greelong-Melbourne line, effectively neutralizing the competitive disadvantage to Tullamarine.

A federal task force recommended a site at Badgery’s Creek earlier this year. The area was purchased by the government for a new airport nearly three decades prior.
