(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 13, 2012 ) England, U.K -- The ‘little black box’ in cars has been monitoring car statistics for quite some time, without many persons’ knowledge. The small monitoring device have some people up in arms, and many other caught completely off-guard. What have come to learn is that when they get into their vehicle, they have a 'snitch' on board.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration proposed regulations that have sat in the around for some time. The regulation would mandate data recorders. These recorders are also known as “black boxes”, and will be implemented in all vehicles starting September 1, 2014.
The agency is somewhat behind the times. Automakers have been quietly adding the devices to vehicles for years. The boxes are used to record the actions of drivers, as well as the responses of the vehicles.
When a car accident occurs and the airbags are deployed, inputs from the sensors for the a few seconds before impact are preserved. The statistics that are kept are usually items like the speed and movement of the car prior to impact.
The purported use of the boxes is to gather information in order to assist investigators of accident information.
Privacy advocates state that the government regulators and automakers are utilizing an intrusive technology without the consent of the individual. Data collected by the records have been showing up in lawsuits and criminal cases for high-profile accidents.
Lt. Governor of Massachusetts, Timothy Murray, had initially stated he was not speeding and was wearing his seatbelt when he crashed a government car last year. Ford Crown Victoria's data record exposed a very different reality. The data showed that the car was travelling in excess of 100 miles-per-hour, and murray was not belted in.
There is currently no opt-out in place for the data recorder. It is also difficult for owners to disable the recorders. Federal requirement for automakers to disclose the existence of the black boxes began three months ago. Automakers admitted to a minimum of 15 types of data collected.
Privacy complaints have gone wholly unheeded thus far. The traffic Safety Administration stated it does not have the authority or capability to impose limits on the devices.
"Right now we're in an environment where there are no rules, there are no limits, there are no consequences and there is no transparency," said Lillie Coney, associate director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, a privacy advocacy group. "Most people who are operating a motor vehicle have no idea this technology is integrated into their vehicle."
