  • Busy Intersections Cause of Vehicle-Pedestrian Accidents reports Dallas Injury Lawyer

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 17, 2012 ) Dallas, TX -- News headlines of accidents involving pedestrian collisions in Vancouver this week have increased dramatically. Last year the most dangerous intersection for pedestrians was Main Street and Terminal Avenue, which is also a major intersection for cars, bus, and the SkyTrain. Data from the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia say that 2011 five different pedestrians were struck by automobiles at the intersection and one had died.

The danger involved with the intersection is easy to see. Pedestrians cross while vehicles are turning left through the same crosswalk (on expired turn arrows). Simultaneously, other vehicles are stopping in the crosswalk, causing pedestrians to walk around, sometimes into the intersection. According to the study, Main and Terminal has been dangerous for a while.

Statistics covering 2007 to 2011 rank the intersection as the fourth most dangerous in the city. Many blocks to the north has the first most dangerous intersection at Main and Hastings, which had 31 collisions in the four year stretch. Despite Main and Hastings being the most dangerous numbers, in 2011 the intersection showed progress in only four collisions taking place (instead of eight the previous year). The numbers are still not good enough.

Although Main and Terminal's standing may not be surprising, because of the amount of vehicles and people traveling through daily, the intersection at Commercial Drive and 12th Avenue offers up an anomaly. Despite the intersection is considerably busy with both vehicles and pedestrians, the intersection did not see a single pedestrian struck from 2009 to 2010. In this year's released 2011 data, four people were reported as being struck. One pedestrian who was struck spent four weeks in the hospital while the driver fled the scene of the accident.

Locals to the intersection say that it has been dangerous, but cannot find a reason why these accidents are taking place now rather than in the past. The Vancouver police spokesman, Constable Brian Montague, said that it is difficult to understand why an intersection will be safe one year and then dangerous the next. Any statement to define a reason would be idle speculation.

In addition to the intersections mentioned, three other intersections in Vancouver had four pedestrian accidents last year: Davie and Thurlow, East 49th Avenue and Tyne, and Dunsmuir and Howe streets. It would appear pedestrian collisions are on the rise.
