  • Sunroofs Becoming More Common in Autos reports Windshield Repair Bargain

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 25, 2012 ) Houston, TX -- More and more cars are getting glass on top in the form of a sunroof.

Many people will look for a sunroof feature when they buy their next new car, according to a survey. About 40% would like a panoramic sunroof, a Harris Interactive poll found.

Carmakers are ready to meet the demand. Last year, almost a third of new vehicles on the market had a sunroof, says WardsAuto, an analysis firm. That is four times as many as in 1990.

Manufacturers are adding more features even in vehicles in the economy class, observers say. Car owners tend to to keep their vehicles for six years on average, so carmakers want new vehicles to be more tempting.

Sunroofs now can be found in vehicles at any price level.

“Now you can get them in almost everything,” Alec Gutierrez, a senior market analyst with Kelley Blue Book, told The Wall Street Journal.

There are many different types of sunroofs, and sometimes the device is labeled a moonroof. A popular model is a single glass pane that covers the front seat and extends from the driverÂ’s side to the passenger side. Often, the glass is tinted.

One thing the different models have in common is they are getting bigger, according to one analyst.

“They’re taking up a lot more surface area of the roof,” Edmunds.com senior analyst Ivan Drury told The Wall Street Journal. Edmunds.com is a popular and authoritative automotive website.

LincolnÂ’s MKZ touts a 15.2-square-foot glass roof, claiming it is the longest of any sedan.

In some cars, a sunroof is standard. For example, the Scion tC or 2103 Jaguar XJ. As an option, Edmunds reports that it adds $420-$1,859 to a carÂ’s price.

Although sunroofs can be attractive features for buyers, they also can be attractive to manufacturers. The costs of adding sunroofs to vehicles have steadily declined.

“The actual material cost is fairly low,” Kia manager of long-range strategy and planning Steve Kosowski told the WSJ. “It’s one of the most profitable features in the industry.”
