  • History of Honda Infographic Released by Honda Review

(Transportation-News.com, February 19, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The Honda automobile corporation has a long and storied history stemming back from its start in Japan, and now one can learn all about the history of the company, from its start in 1946, to its current-day standing, thanks to the infographic created by hondareview.com.

Honda was founded by Soichiro Honda in Hammatsu Japan, who had the goal to develop small 2-cycle motorbike engines, which eventually turned into the company we see today. In 1948, the company was officially established as the Honda Motor Company, Ltd. And the company began its long journey to current-day corporate status.

According to the infographic, Honda had its first United States storefront in 1959 in Los Angeles, California. That opening coincided with Honda being the largest manufacturer of motorcycles, and the largest producer of internal combustion engines.

Honda developed such models throughout the late 50s and early 60s as the T360, S500 sportscar, RA271 sports racer, S800, and N360 compact. The first Honda civic was released in 1972 as a two-door, and the first accord was made four years later. The 1970s versions of the Honda models all had side-view mirrors mounted on the front of the hood, rather than on the side of the driver and passenger windows.

Honda released dedicated luxury brand in 1986, and was the first Japanese company to do so. In the 90s, the Civic model production reached over 10 million, and the CR-V sports utility vehicle was released. The companies worldwide production was over 30 million units.

In 2000, Honda made its first major non-vehicle release with the ASIMO robot in 2000. The robot had a bipedal figure and was able to view through a camera, which allowed it to see and react to its surroundings.
