  • U.S. Car Use is Falling

(Transportation-News.com, May 24, 2013 ) London, UK -- A new report by the United States Public Interest Research Group and Frontier Group shows that Americans are driving less for several reasons: higher gas prices, a weak economy and changing generational preferences leaving a sixty-year driving boom in the dust.

The researchers said that members of the millennial generation who are aging into the late teens to early thirties, are moving into bigger cities and relying more on public transportation than ever before. Baby boomers are also aging out of their “peak driving” years, settling down.

However, according to the report, transportation and vehicle policymakers with existing plans to expand roads, highways and interstates have not taken the decline into account. Even though the decline is likely to continue further, federal and state governments still continue to collect taxes and funds for highway expansions, based on assumptions of growth during the driving boom, which is now obsolete.

Vehicle ownership has decreased 4 percent, from an all time high of 1.26 vehicles per person from 2006. The average number of driving-age Americans who have a license has fallen to a 30-year low, with only 86% holding a valid license in 2011. Just in 2009, that number was over 90%.

The study noted that even the number of miles driven on the heaviest trucks has declined, and it has done so faster than the average american and their vehicle. The average declined 11% from 2007 to 2011.

The researchers concluded the declines in vehicle driving go hand in hand with an increasingly poor economy since 2009 with climbing gas prices no certainty in the future of financial stability in the country.

Because of this, the Big Three car companies, General Motors, Ford, and Toyota have vamped up their line ups with sleeker and more tech savvy body styles, trying to boost the economy with “must have” vehicles.
