  • The Cost of Driving Keeps Rising

(Transportation-News.com, May 24, 2013 ) London, UK -- According to new research by the AAA, driving a car is continually getting more expensive. The 2013 AAA Your Driving Costs study says that the overall cost of owning and operating a personal vehicle has increased by almost 2% from 2012.

While 2% doesn’t seem like much of an increase, it amounts to over $9,000 in yearly costs based on the average 15,000 miles driven in a vehicle.

Rolayne Fairclough, spokeswoman for AAA Utah says that many factors go into calculating the cost of owning and driving a vehicle. For example, maintenance, fuel and insurance prices all affected that cost. Maintenance costs alone were raised by 11.26 percent, the highest yearover-year increase in the Your Driving Costs’ study history.

For sedans, significant increases due to labor, autoparts and purchasing extended warranty policies. The United States average for gas increase went from 1.93 percent to a whipping 14.45 center per mile. The gas study calculated the average price for regular unleaded gasoline in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Auto depreciation rose a slight bit in 2012, mainly because of the effects Hurricane Sandy had on the loss of vehicles, but also because new car sales are recovering from a recession. Lastly, while the price of car insurance vary widely depending on the age and record of the driver, costs still increased by 2.76 percent, raising the average amount paid for car insurance to $1,026 a year.
