  • U.S. Natural Gas Exports Expanding, Slowly but Surely

(Transportation-News.com, May 31, 2013 ) S. Broadway Littleton, CO -- Although hints have been dropped over the last few weeks that favor expanding exportation of natural gas in the United States, the confirmation of the Energy Security Ernest Moniz has delayed the decision by pulling 19 applications for more in-depth review.

Unfortunately, this has slowed the DEpartment of Energy’s momentum to conditionally approve a Texas LNG project. That project would be allowed to export up to 1.4 billion cubic feet a day of natural gas to countries without a free trade agreement (or FTA) with the U.S for up to 20 years. Export deals have already been signed with major companies in Japan.Freeport is the second export project to win approval from the DOE. The first was over 2 years ago when the DOE approved natural gas exports with non-FTA countries from the Cheniere Energy-owned Sabine Pass LNG Terminal in Cameron Parish, Louisiana.

However, Moniz was officially sworn into office last Tuesday and called for further review of the green-lighted proposals before he could make a final decision. Moniz is concerned that the existing study on the environmental impact of exporting US natural gas uses data that is too old. That study concluded that even though the domestic prices may be high, natural gas exports would be beneficial to the country economically.

Foreign companies are rushing to get in on this, hoping to get their hands on cheap U.S. natural gas. Although the review may delay some, other foreign countries may be able to take advantage of US natural gas as more approvals are issued this year.
