(Transportation-News.com, June 07, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Zillow is an influential real estate site that covers most of the United States and tells others what one person’s house could be worth.
Matt Hoenstine said he was shocked when Zillow showed he no longer owned a MetroWest townhouse and showed that the house had been foreclosed on almost 3 years ago.
"I see it says it was foreclosed since 2010 and I'm getting this bombshell thrown at me," he said.
According to Hoenstine, his renters spotted the foreclosure notice on Zillow and went to him wondering why they were still making payments to him. Matt said he worried others made judgments based on Zillow's misinformation.
Three days after contacting Zillow, Hoenstine said it still listed the home as foreclosed in 2010. That’s when he knew it would take a real battle to get the information off of the website.
"I've tried to contact various people in the organization and basically I'm hitting a stone wall now," he said.
Action 9 contacted the Better Business Bureau in Seattle, where Zillow is based. According to the news station, The BBB has given Zillow an F rating because of so many complaints like Matt’s. Consumers claim wrong information about values, square footage and even foreclosures and Zillow publishes them without verifying records.
"These are real economic damages that an owner will suffer," said real estate attorney Karen Wonsetler, whom Action 9 contacted in reference to the fiasco. He said said Zillow has a legal obligation to make corrections immediately.
When contacted, representatives from Zillow said the information for Hoenstine’s house was corrected within days. They also claimed their customer service staff handles everyone's concerns right away, but could not explain how the misinformation was gathered for his property.
"It's terrifying me because I don't know how many people had seen this," said Hoenstine.
Zillow told Action 9 its information is based on public records, but that it couldn’t explain the mistake in Hoenstine's case for several reasons, none of which were given to Action 9.
