  • BBB: Research Movers Before Signing a Contract

(Transportation-News.com, June 08, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The U.S. Census Bureau reports that over 40 million people move annually. The majority of those people will move in the summer months. May is usually the busiest month for professional movers, so relocators are encouraged to research moving companies before signing a contract.

In 2012, Wisconsin residents contacted the Better Business Bureau almost 9,500 times to inquire about a moving company, and filed more than 100 complaints against the movers. Complaints from consumers included damaged or missing items, big price increases over originally quoted estimates, late deliveries, and goods being “held hostage” for additional disputed payments.

The BBB offers several tips on how to avoid moving scams and find a trustworthy, reputable professional cross country moving company.

First, research the company thoroughly. Check their rating - if they even have one - on the BBB website, bbb.org, and specifically look at the complaints made by other consumers. All interstate movers must, at minimum, be licensed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. FMCSA assigns a unique motor carrier number that can be verified at protectyourmove.gov.

Second, check out the company’s website. Make sure there is a physical address listed for the business and pictures of moving trucks and employees. If you can’t find any, it may be a red flag that it is a fly-by-night company.

Get at least three in-home estimates. Requiring an in-home estimate will be more accurate, and will weed out any scammer who isn’t likely to send an estimator to your home in advance. Remember that the lowest estimate can sometimes be an unrealistic, low-ball offer, which may cost you more in the end.

Always know your rights as a cross country mover. Interstate movers must give you two booklets detailing your rights. Also, enlist the help of BBB or local law enforcement if the company threatens to hold your belongings hostage.
