  • DoD and Coast Guard Prepare for Busy Season for Moves

(Transportation-News.com, June 09, 2013 ) Coconut Creek, FL -- The summer months have proven once again to be the busiest time of year for the hundreds of thousands in the Defense Department and U.S. Coast Guard services, as orders to new assignments are being sent out worldwide.

Naval Supply Systems Command Global Logistics Support Household Goods Program Analyst, Deloma Miley, has the task of advising those who are being transferred to book their moves earlier than many often actually do.

The period between May 15 through August 31 is the peak of the moving season for the military personnel, she stated. Nearly 65% of all moves occur during summer.

Regarding how to prepare, Miley stated: “Don’t wait,” Miley says. “With the decline in moving companies’ capacity, Department of Defense budget cuts, and even a possible government furlough, the sooner you start working with the local Personal Property Office the greater your chance of getting the desired pack out date.”

She reiterated the need to be on-the-ball when it came to the respective moves. “Don’t wait until a week or two before the desired pack out date to complete the process in www.move.mil.” She added that planning ahead is more than simply having a bag packed and knowing where one is going. “Begin now; it takes approximately three weeks to process all required paperwork to book your move. Enter all your data and paperwork now. For Navy information on getting started with the move process, visit NAVSUP’s page.”

“Another tip is to organize your house and belongings,” Miley said. “Go through all your rooms and boxes from the last move to make sure you still need the items. If it hasn’t been worn or used in the last year, do you still need it? Sort your items by the type of shipment: household shipment, unaccompanied baggage (if authorized), professional gear and what is going in your suitcase or car. By sorting you may find out what needs to be sold, donated or disposed of. Keep in mind, if you exceed your authorized weight allowance it can be expensive!

The Defense Department and the U.S. Coast Guard are likely to book over 200,000 household goods for shipment in any given summer, according to Miley. Many federal civilian employees also choose to schedule moves at the same time, which means even more logistical problem possibilities. Once again, the key is being prepared and ready well ahead of time.
