  • Medical Motorcycle Responders Save Money and Arrive Faster

(Transportation-News.com, June 09, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- During any emergency, every second is a factor. Survivability declines as the clock ticks away. And according to the American Heart Association, "For every minute that passes between collapse and defibrillation, the chance of survival from a witnessed Ventricular Fibrillation sudden cardiac arrest declines by seven to ten percent per minute if no bystander CPR is provided.”

That fact is only one of the reasons that emergency vehicle response times are an important factor for public safety as a whole. There is a continual struggle to create improvements to lacking areas when it comes to response time, as well as balancing the handling of costs with the services needed.

There are many types of solutions that have found their way to boardrooms in an attempt to meet all needs of both society and the industry. Alternative vehicles that have better operating costs is one such idea that has been floated. The vehicle that has received the most interest

from the industry is the motorcycle paramedics. Such paramedics can reduce response time, according to studies, and that can mean improving patient care, while at the same time reducing overall costs.

Motorcycle treatments have been used for nearly a century, dating back to World War 1 in Europe. However, the use of such vehicles was not utilized for EMS systems until the 1990s. The use was relegated mainly to British provinces that held large metropolitan areas, such as Hong Kong and Singapore. The program that instituted them was considered a large success, and now the United States is looking into using the same vehicle types.

The American Journal of Emergency Medicine has now published a year-and-a-half long study, which was held in Portugal. The study utilized the medical emergency motorcycles (MEM) to respond in high traffic metropolitan areas. The study found that the MEM was first to arrive at accidents nearly two-thirds of the time (63%) out of the nearly 2,000 incidents. The study also found 18% of the MEM responded accidents needed no ambulance, meaning the MEM could relay the information to the ambulance drivers, allowing them to stay available for future incidents.

The study concluded that MEMs were a full minute faster in response, on average. It also noted a 38% cost saving tally compared to the traditional ambulances.
