(Transportation-News.com, June 29, 2013 ) Adelaide, South Australia -- In a new study by the American Housing titled “An Estimate of Housing Discrimination Against Homosexual Couples”, which included 7,000 housing requests in 50 metropolitan areas of the United States, research backing up the fact discrimination occurs more often to same sex couples is solid.
Gay men were less likely to get a response from their housing inquiry than lesbian couples were, according to the study that tracked inquiries from June to October of 2011. Straight couples were favored over lesbian couples and gay couples over 15 percent of the time.
Discrimination over same sex couples isn’t prohibited by the Fair Housing Act, but some states have enacted protections, even if they don’t allow those couples to get married. The researchers noted that states with protections seemed to have homeowners that were more discriminatory to those couples.
Another surprising result that the study found was that there was no correlation between the number of query responses and the size of the metropolitan area, so couples are just as likely to face discrimination in a large city as they are in a smaller, more conservative suburb or metropolitan area
The only problem with the study, critics say, is that there were no studies on rural areas, so there isn’t a way to measure the amount of discrimination in small towns.
