  • New Technologies that Improve Car Performance Soon to be Standards

(Transportation-News.com, July 07, 2013 ) West Yorkshire, UK -- The new breed of cars are coming fast, and there are all-new features that were once considered a thing for science fiction. Pedestrian checks, radar that stops drifting, and engines that turn off to conserve fuel are all going to be reality soon.

"What we see today as slightly elitist technology is changing very, very fast," said Steven Lunn, chief operating officer for TRW Automotive, which supplies electronics and other parts to carmakers.

The TRW group said the newest in tech is not only better than in years past but also cheaper. Standard radar systems are 25% of the cost of old systems as the tech becomes more accessible to the average buyer. Camera's have become cheaper as well as they are now easier to make.

There are a handful of new options that drivers will start to see as standards. Advanced cameras, Collision warning systems, adaptive headlights, stop-start systems, and all lanecentering mechanisms are sure to be something many can't remember cars being without soon.

The advanced camera system is set to be part of a government requirement, and thus has been pushed forward faster than it may have otherwise. The cameras are no longer just on the back of cars, but are also used for when turn signals are employed, as well as a camera that allows a bird's eye view to help parking.

The Collision warning system has been coming down the pike for a while. Mercedes, Honda, Toyota, Infiniti, and Volvo have all been working on automatic breaks to avoid collisions. Chief research officer for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety stated that the systems by themselves reduce crashes by nearly 10% according to a study by the insurance claims company.

A camera that follows the car's movements and keeps it within the lines is something that was a science-fiction concept 20 years ago. Today, it is a surefire addition that will become standard on many cars. Cruise control will become an almost automated system as individuals will no

longer have to worry about speed or staying within lanes manually. The system is already offered in Honda's Buicks, Cadillacs, and Nissans.

By the next decade, the new vehicles will gain a 54.5 miles-per-gallon total for gas. That is up over 20mpg from the current standard. A new “stop-start” system that shuts off the engine at stop lights is one of the factors of the improvement. Vice President of Johnson Controls Inc, Alex Molinaroli, stated that the capability raises gas mileage by over 5% on its own. That estimate is only a minimum.
