  • Food-Trucks Lobby for Their Right to Operate in Akron

(Transportation-News.com, July 12, 2013 ) Melbourne, FL -- Officials from Akron Ohio are not pleased with the new food-truck craze that is affecting their city.

The president of the Akron city council stated that a committee will be looking into food trucks and the effects they have on the established restaurants in the area.

Local food-truck operators, as well as their supporters have been lobbying the council through the social media, as well as other mediums, in order to permit them into the city limits. Downtown Akron partnerships have raised general concerns when it comes to food trucks and how they will affect brick-and-mortar stores.

"You've gotten our attention," council president Garry Moneypenny told the throngs of entrepreneurs and fans of the food trucks. He asked that operators tone down their overall remarks, which have been somewhat aggressive at times regarding the elected officials in the area.

Akron is not the only city dealing with the issue of food trucks. The operators of the mobile establishments have pushed for freedom to operate, and traditional restaurants have been fighting against them for some time. The restaurants state it is an unfair playing field the food trucks are playing on, while operators state the freedom to run business is being impeded by the former.

Columbus Ohio officially allowed trucks to operate in specific public areas under a pilot program. There are now sixteen pre-approved parking spaces that can be utilized by the trucks. The Akron council will look to acquire feedback regarding the program before they finalize their own regulations regarding the issue.

The Akron Beacon Journal has reported that food-truck operators have shown up to the city council meetings for the third straight week, stating they are pleased the request to operate is being considered.
