(Transportation-News.com, July 12, 2013 ) Bessemer, AL -- The risk of death is reduced by about forty-four percent among joggers according to a recent study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. The added life expectancy is approximately 6.2 years for men and 5.6 years for women. The publication backs up a similar study conducted by Stanford University School of Medicine, which determined elderly runners have a longer active life span with fewer disabilities and are fifty percent less likely than nonrunners to die early.
Alexis Barry, director of Services at HomeCare Options in Passaic County says, "Running on a regular basis at just about any age is beneficial to your overall health. This is especially true for those in their fifties and older." Running has been associated with fewer early deaths from neurological disease, infections and cancer. It has also been shown to reduce cardiovascular deaths and other complications. Marathon runners age fifty and older are the fastest growing demographic.
Unfortunately, Middle-aged and older runners are more at risk for issues with their hamstrings, calf muscles and Achilles tendons than their younger counterparts are. Flexibility decreases as we age and arthritis tends to become problematic. With the loss of flexibility, joints start to absorb more of the stress of running rather than spreading the impact out to nearby tissue and muscle. Injuries take twice as long to heal after forty years of age.
Barry suggests, "To lessen the chance of injury, senior runners need to warm-up more, add additional weight training to make up for less muscle mass, and wrap old injuries before running. Proper form is also essential." Landing on the balls of your feet, rather than your toes or heels, decreases the impact and also reduces the risk of falling. "Jogging can be a great form of exercise for older Americans, but check with your doctor before you begin," says Barry. "And listen to your body. If you're sore, give yourself some rest between jogs."
