  • Tennessee Car Accident Death Toll under 1,000 for 4th Time in 50 Years

(Transportation-News.com, January 29, 2014 ) KNOXVILLE, TENN. – According to statistics from the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, 2013 marked the fourth time in the last 50 years the death toll has been below 1,000.

The wrongful death lawyers at Greg Coleman Law Firm recognize the death toll numbers are still tremendous, however they have declined since previous years. This is a great improvement from 2012, and proof that our law enforcement officials are busy at work.

“The state’s hard work in two areas is paying off” Said Department of Safety Colonel Tracy Trott “getting people to buckle their seat belts, and to avoid driving while impaired.”

According to statistics published by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, Knox County took third place in 2013 for the greatest number of auto accident fatalities in Tennessee.

State-wide for 2013, there were 995 total auto accident fatalities; twenty less than the 1,015 in 2012. In Knox County, a total of 59 people were killed in auto accidents, third behind Shelby County with 101 fatalities, and Davidson County with 65 fatalities.

In the TDOSHS press release about the preliminary traffic crash test and statistics report of 2013, Commissioner Bill Gibbons stated, “the decline in the number of traffic fatalities in 2013 indicates that Tennessee is moving in the right direction.” Gibbons claims that state troopers being deployed resulted in the improvements shown by the most recent data, adding that the overall number of DUI and seat belt-related fatalities also decreased.

According to the Seventh Annual Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report, Knoxville, Tenn. Is ranked sixth in the top ten safest driving cities. The likelihood of a driver being involved in a collision in Knoxville is 18.3 percent less than the national average.
