  • Bill Green Supports "Target Zero" Campaign in South Carolina

(Transportation-News.com, December 03, 2014 ) Charleston, NC -- Last year South Carolina had its second-lowest total of traffic fatalities ever recorded at 767. So far this year there were at least seven more fatal collisions than last year. While the numbers are staying relatively low officials say this isn’t good enough.

Director of the office of highway safety and justice programs Phil Riley claims that he has a firm goal of having the number of traffic fatalities reach zero and is optimistic that it will happen. He states “Eventually long term we will reach zero. Wherever it’s at we are still not satisfied; we’re still not happy. Not until we reach that zero.”

Although reaching zero traffic fatalities for the whole state of South Carolina may seem like a long shot Edgefield County was able to do just that in 2013 and was the only county in the state to do so. Sergeant Bob Beres says “There is no reason why everyone can’t get on board and do it for the other 45 counties. The biggest thing is limiting your distractions”

Charleston car accident lawyer Bill Green would agree. His offices receive hundreds of calls a month from car accident victims and their families and many of the crashes he hears about involve a distracted driver.

In fact around 3300 traffic fatalities occur due to distracted driving each year in the United States.

In order for the Target Zero campaign to be successful Sgt. Beres claims “We have to pay attention to the road more than we ever have before.”
