(Transportation-News.com, September 21, 2015 ) Miami, Florida -- SigEp FIU Alumni has partnered with Mark Marandino, CFP, and the Thomas B. Jelke Foundation to host the inaugural Red Door Classic charity golf tournament on October 23rd 2015 at Crandon golf course in Key Biscayne. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to three charities that have helped mold lives throughout South Florida.
The first charity is FIU's First Generation Scholarship. Statistics from Georgetown University Center and the U.S. Department of Education show that 35% of first generation college attendees must work full-time just to go to school which leads to 28.3% of those dropping out. The proceeds going to this scholarship will be matched dollar for dollar by Florida International University.
The second charity is the Buoniconti Fund. Established in 1992 to find the cure for paralysis after the son of Nick Buoniconti (Marc) sustained spinal cord injury during a college football game. All proceeds allocated to this charity will be dedicated to The Miami Project to cure paralysis.
The third charity is also an FIU focused scholarship called the SigEp Florida Nu Undergrad Scholarship Fund, a need-based scholarship fund to help pay for books and tuition for FIU students who are a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.
When interviewed, the tournament coordinator Pete Cabrera was more than willing to share the philosophy behind the event. "Our fraternity prides itself on giving back to our host institution because FIU provided us with an excellent education. We also want to support a local charity in the community, and the Buoniconti Fund is one that our undergraduate chapter has supported for the past five years. That was a huge motivating factor behind doing this charity event. Not just a way to get our FIU brothers together but it was a way to give back to the community, to those that need a hand up, as well as our university."
While spectators are always welcome, those that like to golf and to give can sign up as single players or foursomes at www.RedDoorClassic.com. Registration and lunch is at 11:30 AM sharp with a 1 PM shotgun start.
