These systems operate with two integrated circuits that act as radio transmitters — one is placed in the key fob and the other inside the vehicle. Both these transmitters have to communicate with each other to lock/unlock vehicle doors and to activate the ignition system.
For instance, a driver carrying the key fob in his pocket needs to touch the door handle that initiates a low-frequency signal from the vehicle to the transmitter in the fob. When the fob receives this signal, it initiates a second high-frequency signal with authentication codes to the vehicle transmitter. As the vehicle receives the second signal, the doors are locked/unlocked, and the ignition system is activated/deactivated.
