  • Towing Service in Farmington Hills Weighs in on Planned Expanded Use of Roundabouts

(Transportation-News.com, November 27, 2016 ) Farmington Hills, MI – Farmington Hills officials recently looked at expanding the use of roundabouts on Orchard Lake Rd, between 13 Mile and 14 Mile roads. While construction crews will not break ground on this new project for several years, the planning is well underway for this revision.

“We wanted to move forward with a plan that would improve safety and capacity, and get some improvement to the corridor,” said Assistant City Manager Gary Mekjian. “This is where we landed.”

    Understanding Roundabouts Use

While many drivers in Michigan tend to be annoyed to new roundabouts on their daily commutes, studies have shown that roundabouts significantly reduce intersection accidents. According to the IIHS, overall accidents at intersections with roundabouts were reduced by 37 percent, and fatal accidents were reduced by 90 percent.

When there is a collision at an intersection, roundabouts help prevent the full obstruction of the intersection as well, usually allowing motorists to continue moving while the accident is cleaned up.

“One of the dangers emergency workers and tow truck drivers face are busy intersections,” said the representative for Hills Towing & Service, a locally owned and operated towing service in Farmington Hills. “Roundabouts provide a lane for traffic to enter when one lane is blocked, allowing for better safety for everyone responding to the scene of an accident.”

This project is still a significant way off with consideration having to be made for revision to the expressway interchange as well. “That’s tens of millions of dollars, we’d have to do something with the expressway interchange,” Mekjian said. “I’m getting goosebumps, because that’s an awesome project… It could take 20 years to get all the parties to agree.”
